What a warm week in Nursery! We have been learning about how to keep ourselves safe and cool in the sun and also having some fun…

Thank you to a local ice cream van for a very refreshing delivery of ice lollies! Just what we all needed! Ice pops, a paddling pool and the hose pipe have been much needed this week!
Back in the Nursery, we are all working on our social and communication skills. Can we take turns? Can we ask to play with someone? Can we ask for help when we need it or can we sort a problem out ourselves? Can we find the toys/equipment we need or do we need to ask an adult for help? Lots of skills to help develop our independence and also to help with metacognition. (This includes thinking about your own thinking and working out how to solve your own problems)

We continue to practise holding a pencil correctly and doing our daily finger strengthening exercises. Please practise this skill at home. We also continue to practise our cutting skills, please encourage your child to practise this skill safely.
Fingers on the bottom, thumb on the top, open and close to chop, chop, chop!
In PE, it was too hot to go outside, so we had a go at Boccia! Look at our turn taking and aiming skills!

In Music, we are learning to sing new songs including Mr Frog on a Log, sang his song the whole day long, croak, croak, croak, croak! He jumped around on the pond and we tried jumping around too! The children are becoming more confident when performing, thank you for sharing different genres of music with them and encouraging creativity. This week we listened and danced with our scarves to Waltzing Matilda.

Phonics and Oracy
In Phonics, the Caterpillars group (children staying in nursery in September) have been clapping syllables, playing sound games and listening to a rhyming story. The Butterflies group (children going into Reception) have learnt the following sounds. We need to recognise them speedily…

Thank you again for practising oral blending at home, we can see they are really making progress with this! Try it while you are out and about, can they say what you see by blending the sounds to say the word.
The oracy skills we are working on this week are good listening and being quiet when it’s not our turn to speak. We need to give other children a chance to have their voices heard too.
Your child’s voice is so important, the UN Children’s Rights, Article 13 is Freedom of expression. Children have the right to think freely and share their thoughts, ideas, and information, provided it does not harm the rights of others. Here are our Oracy listening and quiet please reminders…

Our story this week…
This week we have enjoyed sharing Julia Donaldson’s What the Ladybird Heard. We looked at the map in the story and then looked at the map of Newham Grange Farm! We talked about the Ladybird’s plan and how it helped stop the thieves! Some children enjoyed playing in the farm set and tried to retell the story.

Certificates

Well done to our Pupil of the Week, Kaspian, who has enjoyed playing in Nursery this week.

Transition
This week, one of our Reception teachers, Mrs Hilton played a fun game with us. It was a lovely opportunity for the children to spend some time with one of their new teachers.

Attendance: Pupil Absences
Thank you for letting the school office know if your child will be absent from Nursery. Holiday forms can also be collected from the office. We have a statutory responsibility to safeguard all of our children, this includes attendance in Nursery and Reception. Please contact the school office if your child will not be attending Nursery that day. If your child has not attended Nursery for three days without contact, school will be contacting you with a child welfare phone call.
Lateness
We have adapted our timetable as those children who are late miss were missing important skills to help with their fine motor skills. We now go straight into our play either indoors or outdoors, please try to be on time at 8.30am morning or 12.15pm afternoon, as we learn through play.
Water Bottles
In the hot weather, please ensure your child brings their water bottle so they have access to water throughout the session. Thank you for your support with our oral health programme by providing only water in their bottle and with their name on.
Sun cream
Please apply sun cream before coming to Nursery.
What a busy week this week, oh and don’t forget our visit to the farm… Photos to follow…

Have a happy weekend everyone! Mrs Huggins
