At Newham Bridge Primary School our aim is to shine light on individual success and open doors to our future global citizens. We embrace the uniqueness of everybody and are inclusive of all.  Together we guide our children and encourage them to have a growth mindset, to be respectful, independent and determined, building the best versions of themselves and become well rounded, happy, healthy children.  We guide and prepare them for life beyond primary school and provide the opportunity to play a positive role into their community.

We will provide our children with key skills, understanding and emotions to be able to play an active, positive and successful role in today’s diverse society. We want or children to have high aspirations, a belief in themselves and realise that anything is possible if they put their mind to it. The world is ever changing, it is important that they are aware, to an appropriate level, of different factors which will affect their world and that they learn how to deal with these, so they have a good mental health and well-being. Our curriculum develops a range of knowledge and skills which will enable children to access the wider curriculum and prepare them to be healthy, confident global citizens.

The PSHE curriculum is built around three key strands:

  • Health and Wellbeing – developing mental, physical, and emotional health
  • Relationships – building positive friendships and understanding others
  • Living in the Wider World – understanding rights, responsibilities, democracy, and global issues

The RSHE curriculum is based around the Yasmine and Tom programme (Family Planning Association) and this supports teaching our children key topics such as; family life, friendships, diversity, physical body changes, health and hygiene, safety and dangers.  Relationships and Health is compulsory to teach in primary schools.

Our curriculum is enriched through:

  • Charity fundraising and community projects
  • School council participation
  • Visits from emergency services, pedestrian safety, bikeability, NSPCC…
  •  Assemblies linked to PSHE, RSHE, British Values, Rights Respecting Schools, and SMSC

Our PSHE and RSHE curriculum is taught from Early years (linking to Early Learning Goals) to Year 6, with lessons delivered on their own or linking within other curriculum subjects. The lesson can be discussion based, linked through stories, practical … and tailored to their children’s needs. Key concepts can be explored, and we provide opportunities for great discussions and debates, helping children develop excellent oracy skills.

Key concepts covered throughout the year;

  • Families and Relationships
  • Friendships
  • Belonging to a community
  • Media and digital
  • Money and Work
  • Physical and Wellbeing
  • Growing and Change

Early Years Foundation Stage

Linking with the Early Learning Goals (ELG), PSHE supports children’s personal, social and emotional development by helping them to self regulate,  learn to self manage, build on their relationships and learn to be healthy, safe through play and everyday experiences.

Key Stage One

In Key Stage one the children develop greater self-awareness, resilience and empathy, learning about friendships, respecting differences, managing emotions, making healthy choices, and staying safe.

Key Stage Two

In Key Stage two, children are supported to make more independent and informed decisions, developing positive relationships (including online), physical and emotional changes, rights and responsibilities and understanding wider social issues, preparing them for transition to Secondary school and the challenges of adolescence.

Long Term overview / Road map

  • Make safe and responsible decisions in everyday situations
  • Understand and apply British Values: democracy, tolerance, mutual respect, rule of law, and liberty
  • Know their rights as children and appreciate diversity
  • Look after their health, mental health and well-being
  • Build positive and healthy relationships
  • Stay safe online and understand their digital footprint
  • Become active, informed, and responsible members of the community

Progress is tracked through curriculum floor books, pupil voice, and monitored by the PSHE team.

‘Growing up with Tom and Yasmine’ is a RSHE online resource to help teachers meet educational standards and teach age-appropriate lessons that are fully updated by the Family Planning Association (FPA). The program guides pupils through real-life scenarios to cover statutory PSHE/RSHE requirements focusing on key topics: Relationships, Health and body and safety.
