Art&Design at Newham Bridge

Art is the expression of creativity and imagination. At Newham Bridge the principal aim is to encourage our children to be creative and express themselves through art whilst developing an understanding of other artists. Each child has the potential to create wonderful pieces of art at our school with a curriculum that develops our children’s skills in drawing, painting, sculpture and mixed media.

Our teachers provide our pupils with high-quality teaching of art and design that engages all pupils. Not only do we teach skills and techniques that allow our children to thrive, but we also ensure they learn theoretical and disciplinary knowledge behind the art itself.

Every child is encouraged to develop an understanding of how to evaluate their own work and that of others. They have the opportunity throughout their time in primary school to study the work of artists, both local and worldwide, to inspire them to make their own creative choices.

The curriculum we teach is all about progression and allowing pupils to develop their skills throughout their journey in school. The Art and Design National Curriculum shapes our own curriculum supported by the sequential lessons from Grammarsaurus.

KS1

  • To learn about the work of different artists, craftspeople, and designers, identifying similarities and differences in their approaches and making connections to their own creative work.
  • To explore and use a variety of materials creatively when designing and making products.
  • To express and communicate their ideas, experiences, and imagination through drawing, painting, and sculpture.
  • To develop a broad range of art and design skills, including the effective use of colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form, and space.

KS2

  • To develop their artistic skills and techniques through creative exploration, experimentation, and growing awareness of different forms of art, craft, and design.
  • use sketchbooks to record observations, explore ideas, and reflect on and refine their work.
  • strengthen their understanding and application of art and design techniques, including drawing, painting, and sculpture, using a variety of materials such as pencil, charcoal, paint, and clay.
  • study the work and influence of significant artists, architects, and designers from different periods in history.

At Newham Bridge we adapt the Grammarsaurus Art and Design programme to suit our learning at our school. We use the vocabulary progression and the overview documents to support our planning. Below you will find the Art Vocabulary Progression document and the Newham Bridge Art Policy which outlines the teaching and learning that takes place in our art lessons.
