PE at Newham Bridge

“Practice makes progress and progress builds confidence.”

Vision Aims

At Newham Bridge school, we believe that Physical Education is an essential part of every child’s learning and development. We aim to create a positive, inclusive and supportive environment where all pupils feel confident to participate, challenge themselves and celebrate their achievements.

Physical Education is about much more than keeping fit. Through a varied and engaging curriculum, Newham Bridge promotes positive wellbeing, encourage cooperation, build determination and help children develop self-belief. Every pupil is given the opportunity to experience success, develop fundamental movement skills and discover activities they enjoy.

Newham Bridge strives to inspire a lifelong love of physical activity by providing opportunities for children to be active, work together and develop healthy habits. Through PE, sport and physical activity, we help our pupils become resilient, respectful and confident individuals who are prepared for healthy, active lives both now and in the future.

National Curriculum Links

Our PE curriculum follows the National Curriculum and provides pupils with opportunities to become physically confident in a way that supports their health, fitness and wellbeing. Through a broad range of activities, children develop competence in fundamental movement skills, teamwork, communication and healthy competition.

Key Stage 1
Pupils develop basic movement skills including running, jumping, throwing and catching. They take part in team games and begin to apply simple tactics for attacking and defending. Children also perform dances using simple movement patterns.

Key Stage 2
Pupils continue to develop a wider range of physical skills and use them in different sports and activities. They learn to work collaboratively, apply tactical thinking, evaluate their own and others’ performances, and improve their skills through practice. Children also take part in dance and outdoor and adventurous activities.

Swimming and Water Safety
By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils are taught to swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres, use a range of strokes effectively, and perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.

Through these experiences, Newham Bridge aim to ensure that all children enjoy being active and develop the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to lead healthy and active lives.

Sporting Events and Competitions

Throughout the year, pupils have the opportunity to represent Newham Bridge in a variety of sporting festivals, competitions and tournaments. These events provide children with the chance to showcase their skills, challenge themselves and experience sport in a wider setting.

Participation in these events helps to build confidence, resilience and teamwork, while also encouraging a healthy sense of competition. Children learn the importance of determination, sportsmanship and representing the Newham Bridge with pride. Whether attending a non-competitive festival or a competitive tournament, pupils are encouraged to try their best, support one another and celebrate both individual and team achievements.

School Games Mark – Gold Award

Newham Bridge are proud to have achieved the School Games Gold Mark in recognition of our commitment to providing high-quality PE, sport and physical activity for all pupils. This award reflects the wide range of opportunities we offer, including inclusive curriculum PE, extra-curricular clubs and the chance for children to represent Newham Bridge in competitive and non-competitive events. Achieving Gold demonstrates our dedication to ensuring all pupils are active, engaged and inspired, while promoting values such as teamwork, perseverance and respect.
