What a week! Look who came to visit our Nursery children to talk about keeping safe..

We continue to practise holding a pencil correctly and doing lots of finger strengthening exercises. This week Dance and Draw was fantastic! We can see lots of progress with pencil hold. Thank you for providing lots of opportunities for this at home too. Can they draw a vertical and horizontal line? Can they draw a circle and a square? Can they draw a cross? Can they draw diagonal lines? Keep practising these pre-writing skills!

In Maths, we are looking at patterns this week. Patterns in the environment and then making our own repeated AB pattern. For example, red, yellow, red, yellow or car, lorry, car, lorry. We are also looking out for patterns like spots, zigzag, wiggles, stripes and swirls. Can you see any patterns in your home? Aren’t we busy…

In PE, the morning children were taking turns and trying their best running races. The first race was jumping over the hurdles and the second one was throwing a beanbag accurately. The afternoon children played Sharks and Fishes, they listened to the rules of the game and had fun chasing the fishes or changing direction to get away from the sharks!
In Music, we had a wonderful time singing our songs and playing the musical instruments. We are learning to play when it is our turn and playing to the beat. We also enjoyed singing and dancing along to “Bamboléo.” Bomboleo is a famous Latin-flamenco fusion song by the Gipsy Kings.

Phonics
In Phonics, the Caterpillars group (children staying in nursery in September) have been playing some name recognition games, clapping syllables, playing sound games and lots of oral blending. The Butterflies group (children going into Reception) are recapping the following sounds so we can recognise them speedily…

Thank you for practising oral blending at home, I can see they are really making progress with this! Try it while you are out and about, can they say what you see by blending the sounds to say the word? I can see the d-o-g. I can see a b-i-n.
The oracy skill we are working on this week is turn-taking. We listen to the speaker and wait our turn to speak. To help at home, encourage turn-taking in your conversations. We ‘STRIVE FOR FIVE’ that is is five quality back and forth interactions showing your child is listening then responding. Your child’s voice is so important, the UN Children’s Rights, Article 13 is Freedom of expression. Children have the right to think freely and share their thoughts, ideas, and information, provided it does not harm the rights of others. Our Oracy turn-taking reminder…

Our story this week…
This week we have enjoyed sharing The Enormous Turnip. Mr Grierson has been growing fruit and vegetables in our EYFS garden. We tried lettuce and radishes! We had to pull and pull and pull to get the radishes out! Delicious!

Come and Read is every Friday. If you would like to share a story, please come at the beginning of the session, as we close the doors to do our Nursery register after 15 minutes. Morning session 8.30am. Afternoon session 12.15pm.
Certificates

Well done to Ayan, who had a lovely week in Nursery and he is trying to listen and follow instructions!
Congratulations to the children who received our School Values certificates last half term. It was very hard to choose as all the children enjoy Nursery, are inspired in Nursery and achieve so much while learning in Nursery.
Our ENJOY Award went to Ismaeel.
Our ACHIEVE Award went to Taylor
Our INSPIRE Award went to Sophia

Sharing stories everyday gives your child a greater start with their learning journey. Lots of book talk and hearing you tell stories (with different voices or joining in with repeated phrases) is really beneficial. It also helps with bedtime routines and calm time. Please note in your child’s book every time you share their book, this continues into Reception and throughout school.

Nursery Visit
Please remember to complete the consent form and make payments on Arbor as soon as possible. We are looking forward to taking our Nursery children to Newham Grange Farm on Friday 26th June. Click on the link below to visit the farm website. Homepage – Newham Grange Thank you!

Transition
To help with transition start talking to your child about going to Reception in September. It is going to be exciting, they will meet lots of new friends and learn lots of new skills. Our Nursery children are already used to walking to the big hall for PE and over the next few weeks we will visit the dining hall and meet the kitchen staff. It is a big step on their learning journey through Newham Bridge but we will support them every step of the way. If you have any worries or questions please ask. I will keep you up to date with all transition information.

Attendance: Pupil Absences
Thank you for letting the school office know if your child will be absent from Nursery. We have a statutory responsibility to safeguard all of our children, this includes attendance in Nursery and Reception. Please contact the school office if your child will not be attending Nursery that day. If your child has not attended Nursery for three days without contact, school will be contacting you with a child welfare phone call.
Lateness
At the beginning of every Nursery session we do a daily OT session. This includes, finger strengthening exercises, dough and dance, dance and draw, and crossing the line activities. (For children to become physically balanced they need to cross the “midline” or “centre line”, the line that runs down the middle of their bodies.) If your child was late this week, please try to practise some of these skills at home too. Lots of activities with pens, pencils, crayons and chalks will help too.
Uniform
We have lots of spare uniform in school with no names on in the corridor. If you are missing any, please pop in to check and also please ensure all uniform has your child’s name on. Please return any borrowed uniform as soon as possible.
Water Bottles
Please label water bottles. Thank you for your support with our oral health programme by providing water in your child’s water bottle.
PE Days -Thank you for making sure your child is wearing suitable PE clothing and trainers. We are starting to practise for Sports Day and will be heading onto the school field.
Morning Children – PE is on a Thursday.
Afternoon Children – PE is on a Monday.
We hope you have a lovely weekend! Mrs Huggins
