Autumn 1 – Week 8

This week has been an eventful one for the entire year 6 – we have certainly ended the week and term with a high!

We began the week at Eden Camp, a journey through the countryside led to some interesting conversations along the way. While exploring the museum, the children experienced a variety of themed shelters all about life in WWI and WWII. They gained additional knowledge and understanding of life during WWI and WWII as well as experiencing some of the smells and sights of wartime living, they were provided with the opportunity to sketch some artifacts and discuss different vehicle purposes and identification procedures with one of the museum employees (who knew a vehicle contained so much information in our past!).

On Tuesday, we began our first rehearsal for our Remembrance Assembly on the 11th November at 9.15am. Some children have lines to learn, you will find these in their bags! We began to learn two songs that we are excited to share with you during the service. Later that day, we created our final assessment for our topic Fallen Fields; everyone has worked their socks off demonstrating their gained knowledge and understanding of WWI and WWII, it has been a pleasure reading their outcomes. We definitely have some talented historians and artists in the year group!

Wednesday, we said farewell to our Peat Rigg pupils as they went on their first residential. They are having an amazing time and we are excited to share some of their photographs with you upon our return to school in November. We are sure you are looking forward to having them home. They are due back at 3.20pm and I am certain they will have some amazing stories to tell you of their time away 🙂

Meanwhile in school, we have not stopped! We have written invitations to the community for our Remembrance Assembly and took pride posting them to the local residents, we hope they can attend. We have revisited the four operations in Maths to enhance our confidence, accuracy and speed. In P.E, we worked with year 5 pupils and played a bench ball tournament – they were all sweating! Mrs Short worked them hard! To create a memorable entrance to our Remembrance Assembly, we have created some sunset and silhouette artwork to show our appreciation of those who lost their lives in the armed forces and produced some stained-glass window art to symbolise the Remembrance Poppy. Finally, we have had an afternoon in Forest Schools, creating our own medallions and learning to construct a safe fire. Fingers crossed we can make it stronger this afternoon to create a smore to enjoy after our final sports tournament! Will it be archery or darts? Ask your child tonight.

A huge well done to all children at Peat Rigg challenging themselves to new tasks and a huge well done to Saffron and Alex for being our pupil of the weeks in school. It has been a pleasure to witness your beautiful work this week, your retained knowledge about our topic in your double-page spread and your great teamwork and enthusiasm to all tasks given in our extra time together 🙂

Thank you to all the parents who visited us on Parents Evening, it was a pleasure to share with you your child’s progress already, their areas of strengths and next steps. We really appreciate your support. Finally, we would like to wish you all a lovely half term, I am sure some of your children will welcome of the later alarm clock. See you on the 3rd November ready to rehearse our Remembrance Assembly and begin our new topic!
