This week was National Story Telling Week. We started our week off being introduced online to Simon the Poet and Gecko the Musician. Simon and Gecko told us about poetry and using music as a soundtrack to poems and stories. We made up our own story about a sock puppet worm!! It was great! This skills in the areas in nursery included using scissors safely and with improved precision.

In maths, we are learning about positional language and shared the story Where’s Spot by Eric Hill. Encourage your child to use the vocabulary to describe where things are; in, on, under, behind, next to and in front. Here is our story to share at home…
In phonics, we are learning to listen for beginning sounds of words. Playing games like I Spy at home will really help. Some of the children who will be starting Reception in September have been practising oral blending. This is an important skill for the children to listen to the sounds and blend to say the word. Helping your child with this will be really beneficial. Remember to use the pure letter sounds and not the letter names. E.g. d-o-g, blend to say dog.
In music, we are learning to use our singing voices, to keep the beat to music and we also learnt a new song about going for a picnic; we had to remember a long list of different things we would take! We included apples, watermelon, bananas, sandwiches and strawberries! A very healthy picnic!
Haven’t we been busy!
National Story Telling Week
We have loved listening to stories for National Story Telling Week! Did you share lots of stories at home? Here are a few we read in nursery; Get Some Rest, Sleeping Beauty by Steve Smallman, A Piece of Cake by Jill Murphy, Where’s Spot? by Eric Hill and Superworm by Julia Donaldson.

Books for Topics recommends these books for nursery age…
Each time you share a story try using these sentences… “I wonder what this story is going to be about?” “This reminds me of…” and when you have finished reading try, “My favourite part was when…” This sounds simple but is invaluable when reading with your child! It develops skills including prediction, making links and connections, recalling story parts and opinions. If you would like to borrow any more books from nursery please let me know.
Nursery Pupil of the Week
We would like to give our Pupil of the Week certificate this week to Sullivan. Sullivan has been super sensible in nursery this week and we wish him a speedy recovery!
