Summer 2 Week 1 – Friday 5th June

We’ve had a brilliant first week back – like we were never away!!!

In English, we planned and drafted the second paragraph in a narrative similar to our short stories from last term. We gave the children the opening of a disaster story and they had to plan what they thought two important characters might say to each other during the events. Hopefully, the reader sees the characters develop because of the words they say and the way they speak.

On Wednesday, we were joined by local poet, Julie Easley, to guide the children through some techniques to support their entry into the Middlesbrough School’s Poetry Slam competition. The children performed brilliantly in their groups and the two winning teams will be performing in the final at the town hall in a couple of week’s time.

In Science this week, we learned about plants and how they reproduce. We began to understand how plants reproduce either by themselves or through pollination and fertilisation. Our science developed our skills of classifying, and began to show how things can be grouped based on certain characteristics.

In Maths, we completed our work on position and direction. We began to look at how shapes could be translated (moved) or reflected in a mirror line (to be symmetrical). We completed our End of Block test and then enjoyed a maths-based Taskmaster challenge in today’s lesson, focussing on shape, measurement and teamwork.

Our new topic, Why do we remember the Maya? began with an in depth look at some artefacts and what we think they represented. We had to infer and speculate on what the symbols on the object might mean.

The children have begun to learn the words to the songs for Shakespeare Rocks, this will provide support to the stars in Year 6 – tickets for the performances will be available from the school office soon.

PUPILS OF THE WEEK

In 2HB – Joey, for being in school every day and working really well.

Both of our children are wonderful role-models in school.
