In English, we began to work on a new narrative where we learn all about the characters from the way they speak to each other. We were inspired by a short story called Shipwrecked, which featured two sailors whose ship was lost in a storm. One of the characters is a mean old captain and the other a kind and humble sailor. We really liked the sailor because of the words he said and the way he spoke.
In reading, we learned about Howard Carter – a famous archaeologist and Egyptologist. We learned about how he grew up wanting to be a historian and got his dream job looking for tombs of pharaohs in Egypt. He discovered the tomb of Tutankhamun and showed the world the wonderful things inside the burial chamber sealed 3000 years earlier.
In Maths, we completed our unit of work about angles. We were able to use a protractor to measure angles accurately as well as calculate missing angles around a point. If you’d like to know more, click HERE.
Our topic, ‘OUR CONNECTED WORLD’ began with some map work all about the North East of England – identifying some natural features of the land, as well as some famous landmarks. In our next lesson, we’ll be comparing our area to the western region of the USA.
In science this week, we learned about thermal insulators as part of our materials topic. The children investigated the best possible sleeve to use to keep a hot drink warm for the longest. What do you think won: Bubble Wrap, Fabric, Paper or Foil????
We were very fortunate this week, to have Owen (a coach from Chance 2 Shine Cricket) come into school to work with the children on their cricketing skills and technique. We had great fun playing team survival, trying to last in bat for as long as possible and score runs each time we hit the ball. The fielders were great, working together to try and run-out the batters. If your child would like to play more cricket – they can register to play Dynamos at dynamoscricket.co.uk .
Wishing all our friends in year 6 all the very best for next week’s SATs tests.
