Summer 1 week 4 – Friday 15.5.26

Well done to our Year 6 friends for completing their SATs this week!

In English, we completed the draft of our short story based on characters we’ve created, and a scenario where something goes wrong. The reader learns all about the characters because of the words they say and the way they speak. We’re excited to publish these next week and show off our narrative and speech sentence skills.

In reading this week, we learned about Axolotls and Poison Dart Frogs. This linked in with our science work on animal life cycles – which had been taking place all week. The children have really enjoyed learning a bout a wide range of mammals, birds and amphibians this week. Our science developed our skills of classifying and grouping, based on certain characteristics.

In Maths, we began to work on a new unit – coordinates. We looked at using grid references to locate an exact position and how this might apply to describing shapes on grids. This will then eventually develop into using grid references in geography to locate specific points on maps.

Our topic, continued with an in-depth look at the western USA. We used traditional mapping skills to identify some of the human features found there, such as landmarks, buildings and large man-made structures. We also used digimapping software, to create bespoke maps of the region which showed some of the natural (physical) features of the landscape. The children then identified features such as biomes, rivers, mountain ranges and volcanoes.

Next week is our final week of Summer 1 and will incorporate some great activities.
