Spring 1 Week 3 – Friday 24.1.25

We have had a lovely – very windy – week in school, and have been ‘blown away’ by the children’s efforts!!!

In English this week, we have been drafting our own version of a story, inspired by the film Alma. The children have been trying hard to use a variety of sentence types and exciting vocabulary which will make the reader want to keep reading. Our big focus was to try and use speech sentences accurately, remembering all of the rules which make them correct.

In maths, we completed our work on multiplication, where we tried to use the formal written method. We found some of it quite tricky, as there were a few steps to work through. However, we persevered and have made some incredible progress in our understanding – now able to move from multiplying 2 digits x 2 digits (23 x 45) up to 4 digits x 2 digits (1473 x 34). We began to look more closely at using the short division method (otherwise known as Bus Stop). If you want to find out more, visit BBC Bitesize.

Our science work continued to focus on the properties of different materials. We looked carefully about what some of these key words truly meant – by using dictionaries to support our understanding. Ask us what permeable, durable or absorbent means, to see if we can recall their definitions.

Our topic work continued to focus on Ancient Egypt. We did some research (using secondary sources) on Pharaohs – or leaders – throughout the history of Egypt. We found out that some of them were exceptionally young, some were devious, some were ruthless and others were good, fair rulers of their people. In art, we created some sketch designs of headdresses, which a pharaoh may have worn, in preparation for future art lessons.
