Spring 1 week 6 – Friday 13th

A really interesting and busy week.

In English we continued to focus on instructions for how to raid an Anglo-Saxon settlement. We planned and drafted our introductions (which included rhetorical questions, adverbials and statements). Next, we planned and drafted our equipment list – obviously it was full of dangerous things but we described them brilliantly using expanded noun-phrases. We finished up by considering the actual sequenced steps we’d use if we were to raid an Anglo-Saxon settlement – this included lots of command sentences. If you’d like to know more about writing instructions you can watch this video.

Our reading this week, looked at a famous Viking – Ragnar Lothbrock. We read about the legend of him rescuing a princess from a hideous serpent dragon. He showed his bravery and cunning to defeat the beast and free Thora from captivity. We made some scaly venomous serpent and shield models to represent the armour of the serpent and the strength of Ragnar. Whilst reading, we had to put ourselves into Ragnar’s mind to try and establish the answers to lots of ‘Why?’ questions.

In Maths, our focus has been on the equivalence of fractions, decimals and percentages. We learned that percent means ‘out of 100’ and we looked at how numbers with 2 decimal places also show hundredths as well as writing equivalent fractions to be out of one hundred. If you’d like to learn more you can visit HERE.

Thank you very much to the parents who were able to make it into school on Thursday morning for some maths work, focussed on calculations. We hope you found it useful. The children will be bringing home a leaflet all about maths across school. It includes some useful web links to activities.

In science , we are coming to the end of our unit of work on forces and we looked in detail at levers. We found out that these simple machines help us to move large loads but with very little effort (force). Seesaws and wheelbarrows are examples of everyday levers. We’ll continue this work with an investigation next week. If you’d like to know more you can look HERE.

Our fantastic topic work concluded this week – with us sharing our knowledge and understanding of Anglo-Saxon England. We showed our understanding of places names, important towns and cities, as well as which tribe of people we might belong to.

During World book week – Fairy tale Week . Y5 will be focussing on Hansel and Gretel as our chosen story.

Well done to our Pupils of the week. They have had a fantastic week. Awesome!

Ollie in 2HB – fabulous behaviour and hard work this week (as always).
