Spring 1 week 5 – Friday 6.2.26

Week 5: a page turner of a week!

Yet another cracking week full of fun!

In English we began to look at whole new type of writing. We looked at the features we expected to see in a set of instructions: clear title, equipment list and numbered steps. These instructions also used some very specific language features – such as adverbials of time, present tense verbs, adverbials of manner, imperative verbs to begin commands and expanded noun phrases to add detail and specificity to the equipment list. Next week, we’ll begin to plan how we might raid an Anglo-Saxon settlement. If you’d like to know more about writing instructions you can watch this video.

In Maths, we into numbers with thousandths, to help write and use decimal numbers with 3 decimal places. The children have been learning to compare these numbers and sequence them in both ascending and descending order. If you’d like to learn more you can visit HERE.

Thank you very much to the parents who were able to make it into school on Thursday morning for some maths work, focussed on calculations. We hope you found it useful. The children will be bringing home a leaflet all about maths across school. It includes some useful web links to activities.

In PE, we were stuck inside, so busted some wonderful, energetic moves with Just Dance in the classroom! We also had another great session of Yoga, with Mighty Warriors. Well done to our Y5 Sports Leaders, who continued their training this week. They’re armed with some great activities and games to support some of our younger learners with sports and PE at break and lunch.

Our fantastic topic work this week, saw us focus on learning about how England was ruled after the departure of the Romans. We looked in detail at the Anglo-Saxon Heptarchy and each became one of the seven kingdoms. The groups then made a realistic 3D piece of the map to stitch together at the end of the lesson and a shield to show how the different parts of the land were represented and ruled. The children then cast their tokens to decide who should be the overall rulers of the land.

We have enjoyed an exciting story telling week, which included a visit from a member of staff to read their favourite children’s book and spending time reading with the children in Y1, showing them how wonderful we are at reading aloud.

To continue the reading theme, the children will be bringing home a letter all about world book week and our Fairy tale theme. Y5 will be focussing on Hansel and Gretel as our chosen story.

Well done to our Pupils of the week. They have had a fantastic week. Awesome!

Ella in 2HB – excellent effort and displaying a great attitude this week.

Kendall in 2DJ – some fantastic effort in writing her story, trying to include lots of new ideas.
