Wow! Week two, finished already! The week has gone very quickly, which must be a good sign 🙂
In English this week, we have focused on both Collective & Partitive nouns as well as Abstract nouns. The children worked brilliantly to understand that collective nouns are special names we give to a group of nouns – a HERD of cows, a PRIDE of lions, a SCHOOL of fish etc. And they learned that partitive nouns are given to an amount or quantity of a noun – a GRAIN of salt, a BOWL of water, a LITRE of milk etc. We also learned that abstract nouns cannot be seen or touched – they are intangible – and they mostly give names to feelings or ideas such as LOVE, TIME, HAPPINESS etc.
Our reading this week, was all about an amazing book called THIRST, by Varsha Barjaj. It is set in the slums of Mumbai (in India) and revolves around a family’s struggle for water. We began by thinking about the different ways in which we use water – and thought about how tough it must be to not have access to it all the time. We collected lots of water and carried it around the playground (without spilling) so that we could begin to have an idea of the difficulty children and families have when water is so scarce. We showed a really good understanding of the text and answered lots of questions about it on Friday. You can click on the link above to listen to chapter one.
In maths we have continued with our work on place value – looking at numbers up to 1,000,000! Reading, writing, ordering and comparing them. Our new KIRF – Rounding numbers to 1,000,000 is also our area of focus this half term – you should have received a leaflet about it this week.
Our topic work about Middlesbrough, and how the area has changed over time, continued with a real focus on our local landmarks. We looked at how their appearance and use may have hanged since they were first created. Have you been across the Newport Bridge; through the gates of Albert Park; or been to the Town Hall? They have definitely changed over time.
We welcomed back Mrs Collins for music, this week, and we learned lots of new songs as well as using percussions to support the rhythm and pulse. We were also very lucky to have Mrs Short for PE this week, working on our Gymnastic techniques.

Monday 15th is our first spelling test. The spelling list can be found on our homework page and the activities have been assigned on EdShed – simply log in and play the games on Stage 5 Lesson 1 – words ending in ‘-tious’ and ‘-ious’.
