NEW YEAR 5 – Welcome Back – Aut 1 Week 1

Welcome back to our wonderful new year five group! It is a pleasure to see them in school for the new academic year.

The children have come into school brilliantly this week. Although there were a few nerves on Tuesday, they soon disappeared and the children have had fun, worked hard and really settled in well.

We have begun a unit of work in English, all about punctuation and grammar – with a had a focus on common an proper nouns this week. The children should all be able to remember the difference between the two and what that means for their writing.

We began our work on place value in maths and the children worked really well on numbers up to 100,000. We were using place value charts, counters, bar models, part whole models and partitioning to identify the different values of digits within a large number.

Our topic work began this week too. Learning all about how our area has changed over time. We found out how the town of Middlesbrough developed and became an important producer of steel for use right across the world. I wonder what facts the children will remember from the quiz we’ve done this week?

Well done to Lilly C and Vincent for being our first pupils of the week in year 5. They both set a fantastic example of what it means to be in upper key stage two: lots of hard work and smiles!

We hope all the children have a lovely restful weekend ready to come back on Monday!

Our PE days are on Wednesday and Thursday next week.

Next week, the children will be getting their new reading book and we’ll hope to have a new reading record for them too.
