Autumn 1 – Week 4

Week 4

We have had another brilliant week in Y5, this week. In our English lessons we have worked really hard to understand more about different types of verbs. We have found out what makes a verb regular or irregular, how the irregular verbs change depending on the tense, and how verb phrases show both being and action verbs. If you want to find out more, check out this video from Grammarsaurus!

Our reading lessons focussed on an extract from the book Wonder by RJ Palacio. We found out that even though we’re all different, we have lots in common with each other – and we should never ‘judge a book by its cover’. We also looked at some happy poems compiled by Roger McGough and we learned and performed some to the rest of the class. I wonder if the children can remember their poem off by heart?!?

Maths this week has helped us understand more about addition and subtraction. We have been using both mental and written methods and learning to exchange and adjust numbers if necessary. If you’d like to find out more then please feel free to look at our calculation policy on the school website (Curriculum – Maths).

Our topic work on the history and Geography of Middlesbrough continued as we looked closely at the life of Henry Bolckow – a significant individual who really helped to shape, change and modernise the town. We learned lots about his life and work, ready to make an information poster next week.

In Science, we looked closely at Friction (a force between two objects when they are rubbed together) and tried to work out which of our shoes had the most grip (friction) and needed the most Newtons of force to pull it along the table. If you’d like to know more about friction then check out this website.
