Aut 1 wk 5 – Fri 3.10.25

The children have all worked brilliantly this week, enjoying the challenge of Year 5 as they have really settled in now.

In English we enjoyed completing our work on verbs, by reviewing what we had done already: regular action verbs, irregular verbs, modal verbs, verb phrases and phrasal verbs. The children have done really well considering there is so much tricky vocabulary to understand in this unit of work. Thursday was National Poetry Day and we enjoyed a workshop with Paul Cookson to write a poem all about creepy crawlies. We performed our poems to each other, trying to use rhythm and actions to improve our performance.

In reading, we read the opening to a book called How To Be Brave, which introduced a character in a very awkward situation. The children made some amazing and interesting predictions about the events that had led up to that moment. We hope everything turned out ok for the girl in the book.

Our Maths work saw the completion of our block of work on Addition and Subtraction. The children have been using the written columnar method, rounding and estimating, mental calculations and other strategies to solve a wide range of addition and subtraction problems.

In Science, we focused on understanding how we have day and night on Earth. We learned all about our planet’s rotation and its effect on sunlight and shade. As well as learning about life in Norway, where sometimes they go for months without the sun light shining upon them. It must be very tough. You can find out more about the topic HERE.

I History, we completed our posters on Henry Bolckow – including a selection of facts all about his life, his work in the steel industry, his work in politics and the legacy he left behind in Middlesbrough.

Pupil of the Week –

Well done to Pixie in 2DJ for having a fantastic start to life in Y5 – setting a great example in all that she does.

Congratulations to Eveyah in 2HB – she has really worked brilliantly in all lessons, always trying her best!

The first Swimming group begins next week – if you’re one of the swimmers please don’t forget your swimming bag on Monday!

Homework due on Monday – Remember, spelling games can be played on EdShed to help practise ready for the test on Monday.

Stay dry this weekend!
