Autumn 2 Week 6

It’s been a brilliant penultimate week of 2024 in school!

In Topic we learned all about the Tudor warship ‘The Mary Rose’. We found out why it was important and what it helped the Navy to achieve in battles against its enemies. We even learned how to draw an accurate labelled diagram – can they remember where the bowsprit is???

In English, we began to draft our Pestilence descriptions. We tried our best to really paint a picture in the reader’s mind by using some amazing adjectives, excellent expanded noun phrases and fantastic figurative language. We enjoyed being really creative and taking our reader on a journey, following the plague through a village in the 1600s. The children created some really atmospheric pieces with some carefully chosen vocabulary.

Our maths work this week, has been all about the formal written methods. We have revised how we set out our work and have done some brilliant calculations. We looked at addition, and how we regroup extra 10s, 100s and 1000s into our answers. In subtraction, we made sure we understood the importance of exchanging (borrowing) from one column into another to allow us to subtract the smaller number form the greater. In multiplication, we learned the formal method for multiplying up to 4 digits by one digit and even used it to solve some reasoning problems.

In Guided Reading, we used the Horrible Histories song ‘Divorced, Beheaded, Survived’ – about Henry VIII and his six wives. The children enjoyed singing along and then using the text to answer a range of questions. You can watch it HERE.

Our spellings this week allowed us to look back at the spelling test from earlier in the term. All of the spellings have been added to Spelling Shed and the children should easily be able to access the Y5/6 word list until the end of the year.

Happy Birthday!
