Summer 2 – Week 1 – 2/6/25

An excellent first week back in school for Year 5 after the half term holidays!

We were extremely fortunate to have a local poet come into school on Wednesday called Julie Easley. We spent the full day in a workshop with her writing poetry. We were inspired by our hometown and personal identities to create our very own poems in groups which were later performed and judged on the afternoon. Congratulations to The NB Power Poets (Edith, Peyton, Jemima, Skyla and Subhan) & Newham Warriors (Alex, Musa A, Iosif, Jack, Rumaysaa and Shanaya) who won the competition and have bagsed themselves a place in the NLT Poetry Slam at Middlesbrough Town Hall in the coming weeks. We are excited for the children representing our school to ace their performances and enjoy their experience.

In English we have been writing a diary entry from the point of view of Stanley – A character in the book Holes. We have practised using adverbials of time, subordinating clauses and rhetorical questions to uplevel our writing and are looking forward to completing this piece next week.

Maths this week, focused on coordinates and translation. We have found translating shapes to be a tad tricky but with perseverance and a new approach have overcome these challenges.

In Science we have begun our lessons on animals including humans topic. We have started to explore the reproductive system in animals and will continue this learning in coming weeks.

This week, the girls had session 5 of their move and learn programme with MFC and the boys continued with their outdoor learning focussing on team building games this week.

The Pupils of the week –

in 2HS – Saffron for improved effort with home learning and excellent writing this week.

In 2DJ – Harry for outstanding contributions in lessons.
