Autumn 1 – Week 3

Week 3 has been a wonderful, whirlwind!

In writing this week we have continued our Place Value, Punctuation and Grammar sessions. We have enjoyed learning more about verbs and more specifically the verbs to be and to have. Learning about present, past and future forms of verbs has been tricky but we have tried our very best. We will continue to embed this knowledge by completing our English homework 🙂

On Thursday, we thoroughly immersed ourselves in the story the ‘Tin Forest’ by Helen Ward. We enjoyed acting out certain scenes from the story and sharing some of our own weird and wonderful dreams. The most exciting part of the session was when we were inspired to create our own trees by using tin foil. We collated our works of Art and together produced our own mini tin forest!

In Maths we have brought our Place Value learning to a close. This week we have focussed on rounding, which is super important especially as it is the focus of our KIRF’s (Key Instant Recall Facts) for year 5. We have been learning to round to the nearest 10, 100, 1,000, 10,000, 100,000 and 1,000,000. We have made some super progress within this strand of Maths over the previous 3 weeks and this has been evident in our end of block assessments!

Here is a reminder about our KIRF’s in Year 5:

Our Topic sessions this week have continued to explore the Geography of our world. We have recapped our prior learning of the UK’s four countries and some major cities within them all. We then followed that up by using an atlas to find some cities which belong to each country and we labelled a map to showcase our new knowledge. Our week finished by engaging with some Fairtrade awareness. We used chalk art to express our views and spread awareness of the importance of using and buying Fairtrade produce.

A small group of Year 5 girls and boys took part in a football competition across the town. We would like to congratulate our Year 5 girls who earned 3rd place out of a possible 12 in the tournament – excellent!! Similarly, our Year 5 boys also smashed their tournament coming 4th – amazing!!
