Weekly news 23.10.26

It’s been a spooky week this week in Reception. The children have been in the role play area dressed as witches and wizards, making interesting potions. They have been scooping out and pouring potions into pumpkins and learned different Halloween rhymes.

What else has been happening this week?

Oracy – We looked at a Halloween party scene and talked about what was happening in the scene, how the characters were feeling and talked about what they would be doing if they were at the party.

Maths – We learned about ‘prepositional language’, listening to a range of rhymes and the story ‘Billy Goats Gruff’, talking about where the characters are positioned – on top, under, across, over, up, down…

Talk through stories – We enjoyed listening to the story ‘Winnie the Witch’ by Valerie Thomas. A story about a witch who had a black house and black furniture and who kept on tripping over her black cat – Something had to change. We talked about the characters, how they were feeling, used expression and also took turns making children become Winne and be questioned – developing their communication and language skills.

Music – We had a fun music session. where the children were listening to new rhymes, songs with a Halloween theme and moved to a spooky mix with coloured scarves – developing their gross motor skills.

We also had to say a goodbye to Mrs Simpson, our Reception Teaching Assistant, moving onto a new chapter! Good luck Mrs Simpson – you will be sadly missed! We made her a picture with all our fingerprints on.
