Welcome back to our fantastic new year 5 group! It has been a great week back and the children have already shown us how hard they can work. The children have came into school and settled right in. Despite feeling a little nervous on Wednesday, they have had great fun, worked exceptionally hard and have been a pleasure to teach.
We have started our first unit of English work focusing on punctuation and grammar. The children have focused on common, proper, collective and partitive nouns this week. We will continue to recap those nouns as we move onto abstract nouns next week.
In maths, we started the week with roman numerals which the children must remember. We finished the week focusing on numbers up to 100,000. We used place value charts, counters, bar charts and part whole models to recognise and identify the different values of digits in a large number.
Our topic for this half term is Middlesbrough Over Time. The children were introduced to the topic through a quiz and discussing how Middlesbrough has developed form a small farm town to an important producer of steel for many countries around the world.

Well done to Poppy and Jack for achieving our first pupil of the week awards this week! They have both worked their socks off and tried exceptionally hard with all of their learning. Well done to you both, we are super proud!
We hope you have a wonderful weekend and we look forward to seeing you on Monday!
Our PE days are Tuesdays and Thursdays, please come to school wearing the correct school uniform 🙂
Next week, the children will be collecting their new reading book and will have their reading record to log their reading at least 3 times a week.
