Spring 1 – Week 1 – 10.1.25

Welcome back to school for the Spring Term. Happy New Year to you all and we hope you had a lovely, restful holiday. The children have come back to school brilliantly, this week, ready and raring to go!

We began our new English unit (narrative writing) based on the short film, Alma. You can watch the film HERE. The children really enjoyed the film, especially when Alma enters the mysterious doll shop. During the week, we thought carefully about her feelings and emotions at various points during the film and used them to support our work on synonyms and strength of meaning. Next week, we begin to plan writing our own version of the story, where Alma meets a brand new character…

In Maths this week, we began a new unit of work on multiplication and division. We have consolidated our understanding of formal methods when multiplying a 4 digit number by a 1 digit number. We then moved onto a new method for calculating a 2 digit number multiplied by another 2 digit number. This ‘grid’ method can be seen a little more clearly in the image from our calculation policy.

Our TTRS battle this week, saw a big win for 2DJ. Well done to all the children who participated in their own time – you made a huge difference to your team’s score! The most valuable player this week was Shanaya G in 2DJ. A brand new battle begins today.

We have also begun to study a brand new topic – Tomb Raiders, which is all about life in Ancient Egypt. The children have begun to think about where Egypt is and how some of their impressive architecture is still important after thousands of years. Please see the attached file for all of the different learning which will take place over the coming weeks.

We had a great ‘No Pen Day’ on Thursday, where we enjoyed a wide range of learning and activities without writing anything down. We built, pyramids from different materials, created or own artistic sand masterpieces – using thisissand.com and enjoyed a very adventurous Now Press Play story, set in Egypt.

Music – We are incredibly fortunate to be learning 2 different instruments this term. On Tuesdays we are learning Taiko (Japanese Drumming), with Mr Thompson, from the Tees Valley Music Service and on Wednesdays we are learning the Ukulele, with Mrs Collins from Sing Education. We are hoping to be asked to appear at Glastonbury in the Summer!

PE days – Tuesday (Indoor) Mighty Warriors Yoga and Thursday (outdoor) Hockey. Please remember that PE kit and any non-black trainers are only to be worn on these days. Please ensure that any earrings (small studs) are removed or are able to be removed on PE days. Thank you.

Super Readers. Well done to Ava, Isha, Leia, Luna, Mason, Peyton, Riley, Subhan, Toyah, Zara, Alex, Eva, Bella, Shanaya G and Skyla for reading at home 3 times, this week.

Enjoy your weekend!
