Framework for Use

The Government believes that the Pupil Premium, which us additional to main school funding, is the best way to address the current inequalities between children eligible for free school meals (FSM) and their wealthier peers by ensuring that funding to tackle disadvantage reaches the pupils who need it most.

It is for schools to decide how the Pupil Premium is spent, since they are the best placed to assess what additional provision should be made for the individual pupils within their responsibility.

Principles

  • We ensure that teaching and learning opportunities meet the needs of all pupils.
  • We ensure that appropriate provision is made for pupils who belong to vulnerable groups; this includes ensuring that the needs of disadvantaged pupils are adequately assessed and addressed.
  • In making provision for disadvantaged pupils we recognise that not all pupils who receive free school meals will be disadvantaged.
  • We also recognise that not all pupils who are disadvantaged are registered or qualify for free school meals. We reserve the right to allocate the pupil premium to support any pupil or groups of pupils the school has legitimately identified as being disadvantaged.
  • Pupil premium funding will be allocated following a needs analysis which will identify priority groups or individuals. Limited funding and resources means that not all children receiving free school meals will be in receipt of pupil premium interventions.

Provision

The range of provision the Governors may consider making for this group includes:

  • Reducing class sizes thus improving opportunities for effective AfL and accelerating progress
  • Providing 1-1 support and/or small group work with an experienced teacher or teaching assistant, focused on overcoming gaps in learning.
  • Additional teaching and learning opportunities provided through trained teaching assistants and external agencies
  • Subsidies to enrichment activities such as theatre visits and residential visits.
  • Providing further training to teaching staff or support staff to ensure they are skilled in promoting maximum pupil progress.
  • Provision of Parent Support Adviser to support parents in helping to achieve their best in school
  • Employment of specialist staff to support pupils whose behaviour may prevent them from making as much progress as they could.

All our work through the pupil premium will be aimed at accelerating progress and moving children to at least age related expectations. Initially this will be in Communication, English and Maths.

Pupil premium resources may also be used to target disadvantaged but able children to achieve Level 3 or 5.

Reporting

The Head teacher will report annually to the Governors’ on the schools approaches to, and success in, narrowing the gap for disadvantaged pupils. This task will be carried out within the requirements published by the Department for Education.
