The Digital Leaders went to visit the National Museum of Science and Media in Bradford. Our aim was to discover more about technology used outside of school. We had a brilliant time investigating, researching and enjoying the fantastic exhibitions and galleries at the museum.
Our day began with a look through the Kodak Gallery, finding out about the origins and developments in photography and cameras. We’ve realised we’re very lucky that photos and images are so easy to take and share with others today, when compared to the efforts needed to take and develop images many years ago.
The Television exhibition gave us an insight into how TV can be used to share important and life-changing events across the world, but also how adverts can used to to influence and persuade us. It was great to see some of the most iconic and most-viewed moments from British television. We also found out lots about animations and how they were made. We got to play with zoetropes and have a go at our very own stop motion animation.
We then went to watch an amazing 3D documentary about the International Space Station. It was made all the more realistic and exciting by being on the huge IMAX cinema screen. We learned about the technology and science which helps to keep the remarkable craft in orbit around earth. We were ducking and diving in our seats as some the 3D special effects seemed to be happening right in front of our faces.
The afternoon was a huge hit for all the children as we explored three huge interactive areas. The first, Wonderlab, was full of amazing hands-on science experiments which sparked our imaginations and curiosity. We found out lots about, sound waves, speed, heat and light, shadows and reflections. It was so much fun!
The magic factory also played with our minds, with some weird and wonderful tricks of the eye. It made us think about how we see the world around us and how our viewpoint can be distorted and become very different from others.
The final room, The Games Lounge, allowed us to play on a huge variety of computer games; right through from Pong, to the very latest arcade games. We had a great time battling each other and working out who was the best Gamer in the group! Overall, the day was an unforgettable experience to share together!
Our Digital Leaders have been creating short e-safety video clips to help reinforce the SMART rules and help to keep you safe online.
As part of our topic, The Scented Garden we went to Hardwick Park. We explored the whole forest to find signs of Spring, this included birds such as a Blue Tit and a Chaffinch, as well as flowers and trees such as snow drops, daffodils and a magical Elder Tree.
We managed to find everything except 1 bird and flower – so Spring must be here!
Jack and the Beanstalk
After reading the book, Jack and the Beanstalk, we have wrote an account of what had happened as well as character descriptions. We have been acting out parts of Jack and the Beanstalk because in a few weeks we are writing the story as if we are Jack.
In small groups we had to research into the pros and cons of importing bananas from Costa Rica. The factors we had to consider were: air pollution caused, how much money is costs and the hygienic nature of how the bananas are transported. We then had to debate and present our cases as to whether we should import them from Costa Rica.
Within our Computing lessons we have started created a quiz using Scratch. This is based on our topic, Allotments, and involves quizzing people on their knowledge of plants. We have been learning about the use of the Ask code block and using the answer variable to check if what the user has entered is the same as the actual answer. Then we have used the IF ELSE block to determine which outcome to display.
Harry Potter Day
To celebrate this day we took part in a variety of activities including, making butter beer and biscuits, transfiguration using the green screen and special FX apps, wand making and our favourate activity playing Quiditch.
World Book Day
To mark the 19th anniversary of World Book Day, we all came dressed up as our favourite character from a book. In year 4 we made our own book marks. We also had a class discussion to share what our favourite books are and why.
As part of our topic, Allotment, we had a class debate about should we buy bananas that are imported from Costa Rica. this included watching video bout the journey the bananas take to get to our shops in the UK. After this we were split into two groups, one arguing for and the other against. This involved considering many factors such as transportation, air pollution and the bananas being grown artificially.
Heroic Harry Potter Day
As part of Harry Potter Day we all came to school dressed up as our favourite Harry Potter character. Throughout the day we took part in a variety of different activities such as Quiditch, wand making, transfigurations and we also made butter beer and biscuits. we had such a great day and ended it with a children vs teachers Harry Potter quiz – which was won by the children.
We have been learning about the life cycles of plants and animals as part of this terms topic. This has helped us to understand how we survive through life.
Mothers Day Cards
For mothers day we created cards, clay pots and peppermint creams to show our mums how much we love and appreciate them. We also went to the in school mothers day fair to buy some extra gifts for them.
AS part of our topic this half term, Gods and Mortals, we created Greek style shields.
First, we had to design on paper how we would like our shields to look then we cut out circles out of cardboard, used cones, paint, wool and string to make our shields.
In gymnastics this week we created and performed a sequence of our moves that we have learned over the past few weeks.
Firstly, we had to warm up, to make sure our muscles don’t get pulled, then in groups, we demonstrated the following moves: forward roll, back and front support, hedgehog roll and a 1 leg stand.
Athens V Sparta
We watched a Keynote presentation to decide if we wanted to live in Athens or Sparta. We then discussed with others on our table the good and bad things about each one and then finally decided which place we would rather live in.
On Wednesday 24th February a professional owl keeper came into school and introduced to us different species of Owls, such as: Tawny, Great Grey, Barn, Eurasian eagle and Indian eagle. We learnt interesting facts about owls and we even got to hold the Barn owl. It was a very interesting and fun afternoon.
Last week we had practice SATs. We set up our hall like how we would in SATs and we completed lots of papers including: Maths, Arithmetic and reasoning , reading and ESPG. It really helped us to understand the conditions for SATs.
World Book Day
On Friday we celebrated World Book Day. Our theme was ‘A Magical Read’ and we had a range of costumes from Marvel to Hogwarts. In Y6 we had a pack with a variety of World Book Day activities.
Today we did conscience Alley to persuade the Sorting Hat to put Harry in Gryffindor, as our topic this term is Harry Potter. To be a member of Gryffindor house you have to be loyal, determined and courageous/brave.
On Tuesday 9th February we participated in Safer Internet Day 2016. We took part in various activities such as making posters for a competition, modelling comment t- shirts and watching inspiring videos, to help make us aware of the dangers of the internet. Even though the internet is a fantastic resource, it can also pose dangers. We, as digital leaders, lead two very special assemblies. One in the morning to introduce the day to the rest of the school and one on the afternoon where as a school we all came together to share what e-safety activities we participated in. Also, this gave us a great opportunity for our teachers to model their comment t-shirts and share all the nice, positive comments the children had wrote about them.

We also tried our hand at screen casting. We had some time playing a maths game on Purple Mash, and then using Quick Time Player we recorded us playing the game and explaining what we had to do.
