In Year 5, we have been doing lots of work on our BEAST CREATOR topic, including researching the features of the 6 main groups of minibeasts, using classification keys and producing some excellent writing based on the topic and covering a range of genres.
To help with our research and to entice minibeasts into our school garden, we have designed and made a range of bug hotels using reclaimed and natural materials.
Our aim is to attract, shelter and observe minibeasts in their natural habitat. Mrs Hewitt-Best, who came to view the hotels, was impressed by our creativity and knowledge of minibeasts and their habitats.
Can you spot our bug hotels in the garden?
This afternoon, Y5 had the opportunity to enter ‘The Dome’! We watched a very interesting 3D video called Nanocam. We all enjoyed ourselves greatly and lots of us wanted to go in again!
Following this, we completed an investigation involving balloons! The children were given all the equipment needed, they measured it and got straight on with their task. Everybody managed to successfully inflate their balloon using the ingredients/equipment. We all had lots of fun completing this challenge! Well done Y5!
To launch our new topic ‘BEAST CREATOR,’ the Year 5 children went pond dipping and minibeast hunting at Guisborough Forest. Neil, the ranger, talked to us about adaptation and helped us to identify some of the minibeasts we found. We used an identification sheet while we were pond dipping and were fascinated by the different minibeasts we found! We were lucky to see a pill woodlouse too, as Neil told us they were rare to find! Everyone enjoyed the day, even Jeff the Year 5 mascot!
The Year 5 children enjoyed DT last half term as they designed and made Anderson air raid shelters. Through our topic work on World War Two, we learned about how civilians prepared for war and used air raid shelters to protect themselves during air raids.
Mrs Barker and Mr Grierson came to choose their favourites and the winners were Jessica, Joe and Ryan! Well done everyone!
The Year 5 Art Club have enjoyed producing a range of art work this last half term. We have shared some on the Year 5 classroom window, so come and take a look! We hope you enjoy looking at it as much as we enjoyed doing it!
Well done to our Cross Country runners who attended the first round of the Tees Valley Cross Country competition. All of the children were excellent ambassadors for the school and braved chilly weather conditions to achieve their very best. We are very proud of all the children who took part.
On Thursday 24th October pupils from Y5 and Y6 attended a Tag Rugby Festival. The day consisted of coaching sessions, followed by fixtures. The event was the largest tag festival Middlesbrough had ever hosted.
There was an extremely high standard of play this year with many games in the knockout stage being decided by a single point. The Newham Bridge Team played in the Plate Event, which was eventually won by Park End and we are proud to announce that Newham Bridge were the runners up.
We would like to congratulate all the children who took part and represented Newham Bridge. This was the first tag rugby competition Newham Bridge has entered. Well done to the whole team!
